BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX POST-RACE INTERVIEW
-Here we are with the podium drivers of this first round in Bahrain. Congrats for Fernando Alonso, Felipe Massa and Lewis Hamilton, first to third in that order.
Let’s start with the interview.
What a race Fernando! Incredible driving this afternoon, and nice first and second position for Ferrari Scuderia Team, how do you feel after your first victory dressed in red?
-Well, this is a very important victory for me and my team. There’s no possible better starting: First race driving for Ferrari and first win for the championship. I’d like to thank all the boys of the team for the incredible job they’ve done during the whole weekend. This morning we had some problems with the engine, and in less than two hours it was replaced and completely ready to race. It’s been a hard race, always with Vettel in front of me until his engine problem, and a hard battle with Massa too. It has been a very quick race, with very fast lap times, and with a lot of slow drivers. Finally I would like to congratulate all my team, one more time, and to thank all the people in Spain and Italy who is supporting me and Massa, without their backing, it would be much harder than this already is.
-Thanks Fernando. And now, time for the second place and Ferrari Scuderia racing driver, Felipe Massa. Nice lap-by-lap battle with Fernando, but in the last 10 laps your times had been quite slow. Have you had any problems in these final laps with the tires?
-This second position is a good way to start the championship. In the last 10 laps I’ve had some tire problems, because I drove too near from Fernando, and in a very few laps my tires were gone. The car was losing a bit of power in straights too, but not too much. It has been a great race for me because I’ve learnt very much about the car and the way it has to be driven. Also I’ve learnt a lot about how Fernando drives the car. He is very aggressive, he managed to pass me in the first turn of the race, and that is very difficult, because I braked as late as I could. I’ve had a great time driving this afternoon, and this second place is quite good. The championship is very long, and it has just started. I would like to thank all my team, and to congratulate Fernando for his impressive race.
-Thank you, Felipe. And finally, the McLaren Mercedes F1 Team and third position driver, Lewis Hamilton. How did you feel this afternoon during the race? In this year’s pre-season your times made us expect a much faster car, but instead of that you’ve finished the race 30 seconds behind the winner. Any problems with the car?
-Well, yes, apart from the heat that destroyed our tires after only 10 laps after the pit-stop, we had problems in the transmission: due to a little failure in the gear-box and we lost almost half a second every lap. But since we arrived here, we were slower than we expected. We don’t know any reasons, but we hope to be a little bit faster in the next round in Australia. Despite all the problems and the surprises of the weekend, the result is quite good for us, because the new engine and the balance of the chassis are fantastic. Let’s see if the car can be faster in a cooler track and give us the first win of the season. Anyway it is fantastic starting the season with a podium and it has been a nice reward for the team and all the effort they have made. Thanks for all the team and all my supporters, and that’s all. See you at Melbourne.
- Thanks Lewis. Now you can talk in your own languages...
